![]() It starts off on a very lighthearted note, but gradually progresses into darker territory. It sort of reminds me of the town meeting scene in Tim Burton’s The Nightmare before Christmas (1993), where the citizens of Halloween can’t help but compare the traditions of Christmas to their own ideas of Halloween, much like how the Crystal Gems can’t help but compare birthdays to everyday occurrences. At the beginning where Steven is celebrating the Gems’ birthdays, Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl don’t understand the idea behind it. What I love about this show is its fine balance of comedy and drama. His age excels to the point where he’s a feeble old man and on the brink of death. But when Steven realizes his birthday party celebrations are too childish, his gem causes him to age exponentially, based on his state of mind. Shocked by the fact that they don’t celebrate birthdays, Steven decides to throw Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl a birthday party for each of them to make up for all of their uncelebrated birthdays. #9 – So Many Birthdays – In this episode, Steven learns that the Gems can live for thousands of years. If there’s one thing I’ll always remember this episode for, if not, this ENTIRE series in general, it’s the song “Let Me Drive My Van (Into Your Heart).” A song that’s both exhilarating and hilarious at the same time: youtu.be/WKs0gse6U18 The scene where the eyeball gets destroyed by Rose’s light cannon is a great spectacle that’s both stunning and magical. I like how as the eyeball comes closer and closer to the city, the color scheme becomes more and more red. ![]() However, what makes this episode stand out for me is the animation. While the episode does a good job at making Greg out to be a very likable character, I do think the episodes that followed do a much better job at character development and have much better pacing. A good portion of Greg’s dialogue serves as exposition for the audience. As the second episode of the season, it seems like its sole purpose is to establish Greg as a viable character for the rest of the series. This is the first time Steven’s dad is introduced into the series. He manages to retrieve it with the help of his dad, Greg Universe, who’s kept it safe in a storage unit, along with many of his other mementos. #10 – Laser Light Cannon – When a giant eyeball threatens Beach City, it’s up to Steven to retrieve his mother’s laser light cannon to destroy it. So, without further ado, here are my “Top 10 Steven Universe Episodes (From Season 1).” SPOILER WARNING: IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THIS SHOW OR WATCHED CERTAIN EPISODES, YOU MAY WANT TO BEFORE READING THIS LIST! Like my “Top 10 Guilty Pleasure Movies” meme ( fav.me/d7axsje), I’m going to write a synopsis for each of my choices and express my own opinions. To show my admiration for this series, I decided to look back in retrospect on some of my favorite episodes and discuss some of its admirable highlights. Steven Universe has successfully earned its place to become one of Cartoon Network’s many animated treasures and its first season has already been etched into my mind as one of my favorite television shows of all time.
